“Needs are not ideas or cars or stuff to do, and they aren’t signs of weakness or selfishness, but rather they are the energy of life that flows through us.”

Thom's work is based on his years studying and teaching with Marshall Rosenberg and is greatly influenced by Werner Erhard, and his relationship with Albert Ellis. In his book and in his course, Thom has been able articulate and share the underlying consciousness of Rosenberg's work, known as Nonviolent Communication (NVC) along with the wisdom of both Transformational Technology and REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). From this “recipe for making life more wonderful”, Thom has created a curriculum, and comprehensive, step by step method for learning compassionate thinking and living that continues to grow in popularity, and is changing lives, throughout the planet.

5.0 out of 5 stars A source of inspiration and hope
I have read the The Compassion Book: Lessons from The Compassion Course several times through and have learned something new each time. It has been a piece that has supported me in bringing more compassion and awareness to my life and has aided me in seeing things from a new perspective when facing painful or uncomfortable situations. The stories paired with the concepts paved the way for easy understanding and the practices provided on top of the two allow inspiration to transform into integration. In this book Thom showcases his ability to share deep & meaningful ideas in a clear and thoughtful way. I am grateful to have discovered Thom's work and to be able to use it to bring more peace into my life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like the clarity
I've taken Thom's online class before. This book is essentially a compilation of the 52 weekly lessons. It clearly describes the philosophy of recognizing that everything someone does or says is in an attempt to fulfill a need, and then provides a set of skills to listen and speak compassionately. It is based on Marshall Rosenberg's work and is one of the best skill guides on NVC I have seen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best compassion book/course
Great course and happy to find this in book form. Had been doing the year long online course and this has everything except the online calls. Have several other books on compassion but this is by far the best one out there for recognizing and changing your behaviors/language/responses and understanding other people.
